Today marks the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the battle for Iwo Jima, a battle which will live forever in U.S. Military lore. As Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command, said, "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue." Historian Arthur Herman has a great account of the battle, its costs, and its relevance to the world situation today in OpinionJournal.com.
R.C. House has another account of the battle in WWII Magazine.
