My wife and I did some errand running yesterday, and we noticed as we drove around that butterflies were everywhere - thousands of them. I've never seen so many of them out and about at one time. It was clearly a migration of some sort since every one of them were headed in precisely the same direction with precision that would make the Blue Angels jealous. The newpaper confirmed that we were privileged to witness a rare air show by Painted Ladies butterflies who only show up in these masses once or twice a decade. In 15 years of living in Mission Viejo I've never seen a display like this before. The butterflies are on their way up to Oregon after hatching in Southern California.
This rare Easter weekend show of God's creation was really something to see. The Painted Ladies are fairly small, and the brains of these creatures are would probably be difficult to see with the unaided human eye (sort of like some Democrats I know), and yet they know exactly where they are going and how to get there, even though they live only a month and have never made this trip before. They were undeterred by traffic, people, buildings, or anything else that got in their way. They just flew around the obstacles and kept on going.
I'm sure there's a lesson in here somewhere for the rest of us.
