A God Retires - Woman and Children Hardest Hit

You know what really frustrates a blogger? When news breaks and he can't get to a computer to write about it. That's what happened to me this morning. I had just shut down the computer and headed out the door to an appointment in San Diego, and hadn't even gotten out of my neighborhood when I heard that Sandra Day O'Connor had announced her retirement from the Supremes. I knew that every blogger in the country was pounded on the keyboard at that moment and I couldn't do anything about it.

Oh well, I'm finally able to comment and I've been hearing all kinds of stuff today from the left about how the world as we know it will end if Bush appoints a conservative to replace the "moderate" Sandy. Actually, Sandie was much more of an activist judge than I'd like to see in the future, so it's sure that anybody Bush picks will be deemed an "extraordinary event" by the braindead Senate Dems.

The National Association of Gals (NAGS -h/t Rush) already has a dire warning on their website about all the women that will die if a judge is appointed who doesn't worship at the altar of abortion. Somehow I doubt that. The Dems are already calling for an O'Connor clone, but I don't think they'll get their wish either.

The timing of the announcement is somewhat unfortunate. Due to the holiday weekend and the upcoming G-8 trip to Scotland, the president won't be making any announcements until he gets back. In fact, I'll probably be in Washington when the announcement is made, so maybe I'll get a front row seat for the early fireworks.

There's still a serious rumor that the Chief will step down on Tuesday, so there may be more Supremes news the battle we have now. It'll be fairly easy to replace Rehnquist with a conservative, but will be much tougher to get two good conservatives past the Senate filibuster.

Oh, and by the way, according to San Fran Nancy Pelosi, we're not looking for another judge, we're looking for another God. Here's what she had to say when questioned about the eminent domain decision and the possibility that Congress might legislate some relief from overactive municipalities:
Q Could you talk about this decision? What you think of it?

Ms. Pelosi. It is a decision of the Supreme Court. If Congress wants to change it, it will require legislation of a level of a constitutional amendment. So this is almost as if God has spoken. It's an elementary discussion now. They have made the decision.

That really raises the bar on the background check. One thing for sure, the GOP is going to wish it had gotten the work done on the nuclear option when they had the chance. The Dems will filibuster Bush's nominee, almost guaranteed, and a newer and bigger showdown will result. Will the GOP have the guts and the votes to pull the trigger if necessary? Stay tuned.
