Although New Orleans was spared the Biblical level of destruction that many were predicting on Sunday, they certainly didn't come away unscathed. They have a real mess on their hands that won't be quickly fixed. For a good source of information on the damage in New Orleans, check out the WWL website.
The KTLA-5 (Los Angeles) technology reporter, also known as the CyberGuy, was in New Orleans for some type of event and got stuck there when all his flights out were cancelled on Saturday. He ended up holed up in the Ritz-Carlton during the storm and gave a chilling report to the 10 o'clock news last night. Just before he went on the air the hotel had made an emergency announcement instructing all persons to stay in their rooms with the doors locked due to civil unrest which was occurring on the street in front of the hotel. The locals decided to go on a looting rampage and law enforcement was nowhere in sight. Given all the problems with the local roads and airports, there's no telling how he's going to get out of there.
It appears now that the greatest loss of life occurred in the coastal areas of Mississippi where the brunt of the storm came ashore. The Sun-Herald is a good source of information on South Mississippi.
It won't be over all of these Gulf Coast residents for quite awhile.
