Gore vs. Hillary in 2008?

This could get very, very interesting. Al Gore is thinking of making a comeback in the 2008 presidential race, and if he decides to jump in, he'll be the immediate favorite of the wacky left, and especially the MoveOn.nuts crowd who pour money into the primary races:

Al Gore is poised to make a comeback and could pose a serious challenge to Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential race.

That’s the surprising news from "Inside Washington” columnist Deborah Orin of the New York Post, who writes that the former vice president "is suddenly re-emerging as a vocal and visible Bush-basher.”

A Democratic insider told Orin that Gore – who is slated to star at a Democratic National Committee fund-raiser next week – is "keeping a very strong public profile.

"He was the first major Democrat to oppose the Iraq war. He’s keeping in touch around the country and doing a lot of speeches. You don’t do all that if your goal is to play celebrity golf.”

Hillary has been desperately trying to track to the center to keep from turning off the mushy middle, but I think this news about Gore has got her spooked. Why else would she agree to meet with lefty poster girl Cindy Sheehan:

2008 presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and John McCain have agreed to meet with anti-American war protester Cindy Sheehan when Sheehan travels to Washington, D.C. this weekend to cap her national tour.

Sheehan has meetings scheduled with an array of left-wing Democratic officeholders, including Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman - as well as Clinton and McCain, the Village Voice reported Thursday.

Sen. Clinton's decision to meet with Sheehan flies in the face of her attempts to reposition herself as a pro-defense Democrat - although lately she's been scrambling to appeal to her party's left-wing base.

My guess is McCain is just trying to get some favorable press with this meeting with Mama Moonbat. He hasn't got a prayer of winning the Republican nomination, so it really doesn't matter what he does.

Why would Hillary suddenly start running back to the left? The left doesn't think much of her these days:

A new poll of left-leaning Democrats shows Hillary Clinton badly trailing her 2008 presidential rivals, with Wesley Clark, Russ Feingold and John Edwards all getting more support.

The poll of 10,000 readers to the most widely trafficked Democrat blog, the Daily Kos, shows Gen. Clark is the 2008 frontrunner, with 34 percent support.

Sen. Russ Feingold comes in second with 19 percent

Behind him - John Kerry's former running mate John Edwards gets 10 percent.

Bringing up the rear, Hillary Clinton gets a tiny 8 percent support. And the trend shows her popularity fading - she got 10 percent in June.

"This isn't a scientific poll of the Democratic Party rank and file," reminds Koz. "But it's a pretty darn accurate poll of the sentiments of the Daily Kos community. 10,000+ respondents is nothing to sneeze at."

Hillary may still be wildly popular with Democrats at large. But it's the Moveon.org types who flock to web sites like Kos who will have a huge say in the primary process. And that's bad news for Mrs. Clinton.

Hillary's going to be doing some serious dancing as she tries to make the wackos happy, while at the same time not appearing to be a nut herself. Good luck with all that.

By the way, John Kerry only got 3% in that same poll. Nobody likes him.

UPDATE: Hillary to vote no on John Roberts. Is that the cry of the lefties I hear??
