My Favorite Things

No, I'm not going to break into song like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, but watching the hurricane coverage has made me realize that I take for granted a lot of what really should be my favorite things:

  • Waking up in a clean, dry bed with a roof over my head that belongs to me and my family safely close by.
  • Flipping a light switch and having the lights come on.
  • Being able to turn on a TV, computer or radio and find out what's going on in the world.
  • Picking up the telephone and hearing a dial tone.
  • Turning on a spigot and seeing clean, fresh water pour out.
  • Taking a shower as hot and as long as I want.
  • Toothpaste and soap.
  • Having a working toilet.
  • Being able to walk downstairs and not finding 5' of putrid flood water.
  • Being able to open the refrigerator, seeing the light come on, and feeling the cool air.
  • Having food and water readily available.
  • Having a car, and one that runs.
  • Being able to walk out my front door and not be in fear of looters and thieves.
  • Being able to go to the nearby grocery store and pick up whatever I need.
  • Being able to buy gas for my car, even if it gets more expensive every day.
  • Having a good job and a good church.

Maybe I should break out in song, because there are a lot of people today in the Gulf States who may not have any of these things right now.

Don't forget to give to the relief effort.
