Rita Has Arrived, But So Far It Doesn't Look Too Bad

A few days ago most forecasters thought Hurricane Rita would be the strongest storm ever to hit the Texas coast. This morning she came ashore, and right now things don't look too bad. The winds at landfall were down to around 120, which will still tear up a lot of stuff, but thanks to the center of circulation hitting up near the Louisiana border, it looks like much of the Houston metroplex was spared serious damage. At this point the wind reports indicate less wind than what I went through in Celia in 1970.

There is one group of our citizens who are suffering today because of Rita - anti-war protesters in Washington who are upset that the hurricane news will bump them from the top of the newscasts. One of the loonies even posted this at Democratic Underground, a rubber room holding pen for the wacky left (h/t Little Green Footballs):
I am worried Rita will overshadow the War Protest

This is just bad timing! Just look here on DU. Their are more threads about Rita than the war protest. If we cant stay focused then I can’t believe the rest of the country will be. Rita is doing damage to our countries politics as well. Rita sucks in every way! Well actually Rita BLOWS!!!!Thoughts?
This is the same group of people who demand compassion for Iraqi terrorists, but can't seem to find compassion for their fellow Americans.
