Alito Has Them Surrounded

It was obvious from today's hearings that the Dem members were smarting from the criticism they were getting from all sides, and decided to try and turn up the heat. Instead, they simply lit the match that finished off their immolation.

At the end of the day, the stress of sitting by and watching her husband be endlessly slandered finally got the best of Mrs. Alito (from Drudge):
Judge Samuel A. Alito’s wife Martha left the confirmation hearing room in tears this evening, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) apologized to the Judge’s family for the behavior of his fellow committee members during the course of the last three days.

Sen. Graham said: “Judge Alito, I am sorry that you’ve had to go through this. I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this.”

Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have attacked Judge Samuel A. Alito over his membership in Concerned Alumni of Princeton and his involvement in the Vanguard case.

One senior Republican in the hearing room said of the situation: “After three full days of attacks against her husband’s character, Mrs. Alito had enough. Democrat behavior during this hearing has not only been wrong, it’s been embarrassing. Ted Kennedy is nothing but a bully.”

I'm just sorry Mrs. Alito didn't call Kennedy a drunken S.O.B. and shoot him the double bird on the way out. THAT would have been great television. The image of Mrs. Alito leaving the room in tears is going to be the overriding image from these hearings, and it will not play well in middle America. The Dems just look like bullies and buffoons, and why would America want to put these guys in charge again? This image will haunt the Dems.

Why would any good person want to go through an ordeal like this? You'd either have to have an oversized ego, be completely crazy, or be a dedicated public servant who loves the law and wants one of the highest law jobs in the country. That latter category pretty accurately describes Alito, but I can imagine that many good candidates who don't share his level of dedication will not allow themselves or their families to be put through the Senate circle-jerk.

If nothing else, today's Senate circus will pretty much guarantee the confirmation of Alito. The Dems have nothing, and Dem Senators from red states, especially those up for reelection this year, will be hard-pressed to vote against him.

Thanks, Teddy.
