Mark Sanchez, a redshirt freshman battling to become USC's starting quarterback, was arrested this afternoon after a female USC student told police that Sanchez sexually assaulted her earlier today.
Sanchez was taken into custody at the Cardinal Gardens Apartments in the 3100 block of McClintock Ave., just north of the campus, at about 4 p.m., said Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman. The assault, police said, allegedly occurred about 12:30 a.m.
LAPD's elite robbery-homicide division is investigating the case. Sanchez, 19, has been booked on suspicion of sexual assault, and is in custody in the jail at LAPD's Parker Center, in downtown Los Angeles. He has not been charged, Lee said.
According to the news this morning, Sanchez was freed on $200,000 bail.
The reason this bothers me so much is not because I'm an SC fan, but because Sanchez was the starting quarterback at Mission Viejo High School where my kids attend. I saw nearly every game of his last two years during which the Diablos lost only one game and won a CIF title. All of us were proud to see him go to a top school and looked forward to seeing him lead the Trojans, and maybe head to the NFL someday. I can remember his dad standing quietly at the top of the grandstands watching him play, and I'm sure he had big goals for Sanchez' future.
That may now have all gone up in smoke. Yes, I know - innocent until proven guilty, but no matter how this turns out, it will be a stain on his reputation forever, and of course if he's guilty, he can forget any hope of a college or professional career. Nobody will touch him.
What a shame.
