Mary Katherine Ham, blogging at HughHewitt.com recounts a couple of scenes - one which pled the case for anti-gun lefties everywhere, and one which poked fun at the way liberals look at our tax dollars. First the anti-gun screed:
"This is our fifth press briefing since midnight and obviously there is one story that's going to be dominating the news around the world for the next few days and it would be easy to think that President Bartlett, Joshua Lyman and Stephanie Abbott were the only people who were victims of a gun crime last night. They weren't. Mark Davis and Sheila Evans of Philadelphia were killed by a gun last night. He was a biology teacher and she was a nursing student. Tina Bishop and Belinda Larkin were killed with a gun last night. They were twelve. There were 36 homicides last night, 480 sexual assaults, 3,411 robberies, 3,685 aggravated assaults, all at gunpoint. If anyone thinks those crimes could have been prevented if the victims themselves had been carrying guns I'd only remind you that the President of the United States was shot last night while surrounded by the best-trained armed guards in the history of the world. Back to the briefing."
Pure nonsense, but I'm sure it gave the lefties a thrill. Then we have the one brief moment when liberal tax policies were mocked:
Donna: "I want my money back."This segment basically reproduced what Bill Clinton said in a speech one time about how he didn't want to return surplus funds to the taxpayers because they might not spend it the "right" way.
Josh: "Sorry."
Later, they pick up the argument:
Donna: "What's wrong with me getting my money back?"
Josh: "You won't spend it right."
Donna: "What do you mean?"
Josh: "Let's say your cut of the surplus is $700. I want to take your money, combine it with everybody else's money, and use it to pay down the debt and further endow Social Security. What do you want to do with it?"
Donna: "Buy a DVD player."
Josh: "See."
Oh well, it's been an interesting ride with the Bartlett administration. I especially enjoyed the fact that a Republican won the White House twice while the show was on the air, and the GOP retained both houses of Congress in every election during the show's run. Maybe seeing the liberal politics in action helped push voters over to the GOP. Who knows, but if it helped, then it was worth that hour a week that it was on.
