That's the assertion in a Time Magazine story that will be the subject of much discussion and conjecture this week. According to the report, an al-Qaeda cell was only 45 days from launching a poison gas attack against New York subways before the whole thing was called off the AQ's #2 guy. Why? Nobody really knows, though the speculation is that a larger attack was in the planning stages and the senior AQ guys didn't want to mess that up.
You can read the report here.
New Yorkers have to live with the possibility that they'll be attacked at any time (as do we all, though to a lessor extent). One year from today I'm supposed to be in New York City, so let's hope US law enforcement is able to keep after these guys and keep foiling their plans.
