Looks like Francine Busby's remarks which many took to imply that illegal immigrants could vote for her helped drive the Democrats to another "almost victory". I'm sure there's great celebrating going on at the angry left sites. You know how they love "moral victories".
Meanwhile, the Republicans will retain the seat in the 50th District with a "real victory". Busby will face Bilbray again in the November election for the next two year term, but I think all the air went out of Busby's campaign after this defeat. I look for the margin in November to be several points higher.
In other election news, both California propositions failed, with the Reiner "tax the rich" preschool initiative absolutely getting drubbed 61%-39%. This margin is hard to believe given that just a few days ago the pollsters were telling us that Prop. 82 had been polling with a slight lead for most of the campaign, but had dropped slightly behind in the final days of the campaign. The pollsters really kicked this one.
In the steel cage death match that was the Democratic gubernatorial campaign, Treasurer Phil Angelides out-slung Controller Steve Westly who's about 35 million poorer after this campaign. I hope he enjoyed spending his money that way. Both candidates damaged each other in the process, which will make Arnold's campaign a little easier this fall. It will still be close, but Angelides just doesn't have any charisma going for him, and I think he'll ultimately lose.
Hopefully we'll get at least a brief break in the TV ads.
