I just watched the last 45 minutes or so of the Tour de France, and the last stage is kind of curious. Floyd Landis won as expected, largely because the last stage is more victory lap than race. Granted, the sprinters take it very seriously and there's a mad dash at the very end to win the stage, but the rest of the field pretty much just rides along and the yellow jersey (tour leader) isn't really challenged.
It's kind of like running the Daytona 500, stopping the racing after 475 miles and just running the last 25 miles as parade laps. It guess it works for biking, but it would be pretty boring in another other form of racing.
