The politically charged documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" has been picked up for worldwide distribution by the Weinstein Co.
A release is tentatively scheduled for the fall, possibly right before the November elections.
The film revolves around the aftermath of singer Natalie Maines' statement at a 2003 London concert, where she said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
It chronicles death threats, political attacks and radio boycotts against the country trio, and that could make the film a political hot potato as well as potential ammo should longtime Democratic party supporter Harvey Weinstein become involved in the fall political campaigns.
The headline at Newsmax read "Dixie Chicks Film Could Affect Elections". Oh, c'mon. If anyone seriously thinks a Ditsy Chicks movie is going to affect the elections, let me just remind you of a couple of things:
- Michael Moore's agitprop Fahrenheit 911 was supposed to drive Bush out of office in 2004. How'd that go?
- A bunch of rockers, including Bruce Springsteen, toured in support of John Kerry during the fall of 2004. How'd that go? In fact, George Will put it this way a couple of days after the 2004 election:
In 2000, Americans were reminded that electoral votes select presidents. In 2004, Democrats were reminded that Bruce Springsteen does not.
If anything, Americans will come to believe that the movie's title is highly appropriate.
