The ACLU Doesn't Like the Senate Deal (So It Must Be Good)

This is good news - the compromise struck by the renegade GOP Senators and President Bush has gotten a thumbs down from the ACLU:
New Military Commissions Compromise Gives License to Abuse Prisoners,
ACLU Says Dangerous Proposal Must Be Rejected

WASHINGTON - Following announcements that an agreement has been reached between the White House and Senators John Warner (R-VA), John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on military commissions, the American Civil Liberties
Union today said the compromise agreement does not protect due process, fails to meet international treaty obligations and urged lawmakers to reject the deal.
There's more that you can read here (if you must). The fact that the ACLU has their tighty-whities in a wad tells me that the president pretty much got what he wanted, and Senators McCain, Warner and Graham were just putting on a show. Since the Dems were hiding behind the GOP Senators in the hope of killing the bill altogether, they now find themselves out there all by themselves in trying to give more rights to terrorists.

I still think this whole thing was a kabuki dance on the part of the Senators, but if it hung the Dems out to dry in the process, it was worth the aggravation.
