Accusing Republicans of failing to adequately monitor the conduct of the war in Iraq, Senate Democrats on Wednesday announced their own series of hearings into what they called a failed policy. The Dems are clearly panicked by Bush's rising poll numbers and feel that the only way they can turn that around is to try and get everyone focused on Iraq. In fact, it's likely to focus everyone on the fact that the Dems are not serious about the war on terror, and the voters won't have too hard a time seeing the hearings for the campaign stunts that they are.
"Three years into war, the American people still don't have a clear picture of what's gone wrong in Iraq -- or how to set it right," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
"We've been going backward for too long," he said.
Democrats said they had invited Republicans to attend the hearings, which will start in Washington on Monday and move across the country in October and November -- before and after the November 7 congressional elections in which control of both houses are at stake.
I've also noticed a sudden surge in stories reporting that voters are dissatisfied with the Republican Congress and that a majority of polled voters would vote for Dems instead of the GOP. The media is clearly disturbed about the president's poll numbers as well, and must redouble their efforts to convince GOP voters that the cause is already lost and that a Dem majority is a sure thing.
It won't work.
