Drivers in California will need an ear piece or speaker to use their mobile phones while on the road under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.The fact is other studies have indicated that using earphones or wireless headsets is just as dangerous as hand held phones, so don't look for the accident rate to drop. This will probably be the most ignored law in the history of the state, right behind the speed limit.
Motorists could face fines of up to $50 if they violate the law, which makes it an infraction to hold a cell phone while driving. It takes effect July 1, 2008, and is similar to laws in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington D.C.
Cell-phone use is the top cause of accidents triggered by distracted drivers, according to California Highway Patrol statistics dating to 2001.

Governator Signs Future Most Ignored Law
The nanny state is alive and well in California, and the Governator is joining once again with the lefty legislature to play babysitter to the state's drivers. They've passed and signed a law banning the use of hand held cellphones in cars:
