A prominent and powerful evangelical Christian leader, James Dobson, said yesterday that the Mormon faith practiced by Governor Romney of Massachusetts could pose a serious obstacle if Mr. Romney makes a bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.I have a pretty simple take on this. Whether or not Christians will vote for Romney will depend more on who Romney's opponent is, than who Romney is. Romney will be a very attractive candidate, if he gets that far in the primary process (and that's doubtful if John McCain or Rudy Giuliani are in the mix), but if he makes it to the finals and is up against Hillary, AlGore, or John F'ing Kerry, Christians will run each other over trying to get to the polls to vote for him. And I don't care if his running mate is the Angel Maroni.
"I don't believe that conservative Christians in large numbers will vote for a Mormon but that remains to be seen, I guess," Mr. Dobson said on a syndicated radio program hosted by a conservative commentator, Laura Ingraham.
John and Lowell at Article6blog have also posted on this subject. They're a lot smarter than me, so go check out their take on the issue.
