Where Are All the New Hispanic Voters?

After the hysterical protests earlier this year over the subject of illegal immigration, I heard many pundits on the left exclaiming how this movement would result in dramatic increases in Hispanic voters and together, they'd be a major force for the Dem party. At that time I thought that was foolishness because, frankly, a significant percentage of those who were protesting were illegal aliens and couldn't vote if they wanted to (though the Dems usually try and find ways to work around little things like citizenship when they register new voters).

Just yesterday I saw a news report on a Hispanic political gathering in which the organizers were promising massive Hispanic voter registration, and that "together they would vote out Schwartzenegger and the Republicans".

Maybe not (from Political Wire):

"Four months after millions of Hispanics took to the streets to show their political clout, what is most striking is what hasn't happened: Community organizers say they have done little to register immigrants for the 2006 elections -- and face an uphill climb even for 2008," reports the Wall Street Journal."

Hispanics are the largest minority group in the U.S. and account for more than half of all foreign-born immigrants. But historically, most of them can't or don't file for citizenship, and most of those who do file don't vote."

I feel an "I told you so" coming on.
