For those of you who don't live in Southern California, you haven't been privy to the extreme hype leading up to the UCLA/USC game that was played yesterday afternoon. There have been all kinds of bets, promises, deals, etc. riding on that big game. Conventional wisdom indicated that USC would have a pretty easy time of it and would then go on to play in the national championship game in January. Not so, as UCLA held them off at the Rose Bowl.
One winner (or loser, depending on how you look at this) is furniture retailer HD Buttercup. The ardent UCLA fans made a wager of their own prior to the game promising free furniture if UCLA won. The deal was you had to buy at least $2,000 worth in the couple of days prior to the game, and if UCLA won, they would refund your money. Given the odds against the Bruins, it was a pretty safe bet.
Apparently some folks took them up on the deal and just outfitted their homes with free stuff. I hope they stuff they bought was blue and gold.
I haven't yet found the follow-up story on just how much free furniture the store just gave away, but I'll update it when I do.
