LOS ANGELES -- Fires fanned by Santa Ana winds burned at least 12 homes as they spread to more than 10 acres Monday in Malibu, authorities said. The high winds that gave us such a bumpy ride on the flight home last night were driving the fire right toward the sea and the multi-million dollar beachfront homes.
More than 300 firefighters responded to a blaze near West Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson. Winds were blowing at 21 mph when the original blaze erupted at about 5 p.m.
At least eight buildings were destroyed and five were damaged, according to fire officials. LA County fire officials also said several vehicles were also damaged in the blaze, and more than 20 acres of land had been burned.
