The HolyCoast family is spending a couple of nights in Long Beach, CA this weekend in conjunction with the All Southern Honor Band festivities at Cal State Long Beach. Thankfully, the hotel has a good wireless connection so I can keep up with what's going on.
[Begin Bragging] My daughter auditioned and not only won a spot in the Symphonic Band (from among 1500 applicants), but made first chair in the flute section and will have a feature or two during the concert on Sunday. [End Bragging]
Because we realized that we would have to make something like six roundtrips between home and Long Beach in three days to accomodate the rehearsals and performance, we elected to get a hotel near the school and will do some sightseeing tomorrow.
Tonight we ate at a terrific Italian place right across the street from the hotel, and then went down to the Pike area to look around. We walked a bunch, the kids rode the ferris wheel, we rode an elevator in a lookout tower that has apparently been used as a bathroom, went through the shops at Shoreline Village, and then as we drove back out watched two black guys fighting behind a restaurant. A very culturally diverse evening.
Tomorrow we'll do a little shopping, visit the Queen Mary and the Scorpion submarine, and may pop in to the big home and garden show at the convention center. Should be fun.
