O'Brien (R), "was elected speaker of the House yesterday through a stealth maneuver pulled off by top Democrats, whose party narrowly controls the chamber," the Phildelphia Inquirer reports.How bad must the Dem have been during his 3 1/2 years as Speaker if they would rather have a Republican in the big chair? Maybe this will give some folks in Washington a good idea.
"It marks the first time in modern Pennsylvania history -- and perhaps in centuries -- in which a member of the minority party will wield the state speaker's gavel."
"Although O'Brien said he remains a Republican, he promised not to interfere with the powers of the Democratic majority, including the naming of the chairs of the House committees."
