Some of the top players at Mission Viejo High School have ended up in top college football programs, and I had a chance to see two of them during today's bowl games. Mark Sanchez, former star quarterback at MVHS is now a back-up quarterback at USC. Sanchez got in for a couple of downs late in the game, but I would guess in a year or so he'll have the starting role.
During the Fiesta Bowl I got to watch one of my all-time favorite MVHS players. During my daughter's freshmen year I became a big fan of MVHS football, and one player seemed to really stand out. His name was Marty Tadman and he was a wide receiver and kick returner who made many exciting catches and long runs during that year. I think Marty even passed for a touchdown during one of the playoff games.
Marty went on to play at Boise State and as I write this, Boise State is beating Oklahoma 28-20. Marty is a junior defensive starter now and is playing safety and kick returner, and has two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, in tonight's game. It's not over yet and Oklahoma is showing signs of making a comeback. I'll update the score later.
UPDATE: OUCH! A heartbreaker in the making. Oklahoma came back to tie the game with 1:26 remaining (after getting a 2 point conversion on the third try following two penalties). On Boise State's first play in the next series they threw and interception that was run back for a touchdown. With 1:02 remaining OU is up 35-28.
UPDATE2: YIKES! Boise State has 4th & 18 with just a few seconds left and connects on a pass and lateral which turns into a touchdown. The score is tied at the end of regulation. We're going to overtime.
UPDATE3: UNBELIEVABLE!! Boise State runs a Statue of Liberty play to score a 2 point conversion in overtime and win the game. Congrats to Boise State and Marty Tadman!
