Fox Tries to Drive up NASCAR Ratings

This graphic was headlining FoxNews.com this afternoon:

Just a little sensational, don't you think? Yes, the fuel deal with the Waltrip team is a big ugly mess, and the four other crew chiefs who were tossed out for a time make for some interesting headlines, but I don't think it quite rises to the tabloid level of this graphic. Since Fox will broadcast this race, along with the first half of the season, it looks to me like they're going for a little sweeps hype.

In case you didn't see it in the earlier post, much to the amazement of myself and most everyone else who pays attention to NASCAR, Michael Waltrip managed to race a backup car, with no practice laps on it at all, to an eighth place finish in the first of the Dual 150's and locked himself into the race. I'm sure that car is undergoing a significant NASCAR inspection, but I don't think they'll find anything. Waltrip has always been a good restrictor plate racer (all four of his wins are on restricter plate tracks) and I guess we shouldn't be surprised that he was able to run fast enough to get in the race.

He really needed to get in, too. He's already 100 points in the hole, so hopefully he can finish high up enough on Sunday to get out of the negative numbers.

Meanwhile, Jeff Gordon won the 2nd of the Twin 150's and promptly failed post-race inspection. It appears that it was a parts failure, and not an intentional act, but as a result Gordon will have to start at the back of the pack instead of the 2nd row. Bummer.
