I was wondering how we'd gone from the intense national unity in the days after 9/11 to the place we are today in which the war on terror seems to be fought only by the GOP. How'd that happen?
Maybe I had an epiphany (or perhaps a mild stroke), but something occurred to me today that hadn't hit me until now. I think I might be on to something. As always, you're ideas are welcome.
On 9/11 the terrorists attacked America, or so we all thought at the time. There was a collective sense of outrage that such a thing could happen to our country. But I think the attacks were perceived very differently by the opposing political persuasions.
Republicans saw the attacks as an attack on American values, our financial system, and our government. I'm beginning to think the Dems saw the attack as an attack on capitalism, big business, and the military-industrial complex. Those three institutions are generally loathed by liberals, and I think that may explain why the initial outrage has disappeared from the lefties. They simply have a hard time generating outrage from an attack on three institutions that they despise.
It's sort of like the way many Americans felt when Iraq attacked Iran in the 80's. Neither side was particularly liked by most Americans, and it didn't matter who won as long as somebody lost. I'm not suggesting that the lefties don't mourn the lost lives, but perhaps they have a hard time generating the kind of response that would demand justice for people who were working for the "man". Had one of those planes crashed into the Capitol Building and killed some prominent Democrats, I think their whole attitude toward the war on terror would be different today.
Just an idea.
