More on the Partial Birth Decision

When I posted the news about the partial birth abortion ruling I didn't have time to really look at it and see what the court actually did. As I traveled today and listened to the talking heads, it appears that the decision is not as sweeping as pro-lifers would hope, and much less damaging to abortion "rights" than will be portrayed by the left.

Justice Kennedy appeared to leave lots of wiggle room in his opinion for future challenges, and even suggested that he might be pursuaded to change his mind. The epitome of a "swing" justice. While there's certainly cause for celebration on the part of pro-lifers, I wouldn't break out the bubbly just yet since I doubt this thing's over.

The left, however, will play it as a devastating defeat for women's rights and all but an overturning of Roe v. Wade. Why? It sounds better that way in their fundraising and campaign materials. This decision will be used to scare millions of dollars out of liberal pockets, and try and scare millions of voters into reelecting the Dem majority in '08.

The phrase you'll hear a lot is that this decision "puts the health of women at stake". Dr. C. Everett Koop, former Surgeon General (under Clinton, I believe) has said that in today's modern health care system, he can't think of a situation in which it would be necessary to have a partial birth abortion to save a mother. Medical science has advanced far enough to avoid that situation. You won't hear him quoted by any of the libs.

Of course, most of the major presidential candidates weighed in and came pretty much down party lines. Drudge provides the links:

HILLARY: 'Erosion of our constitutional rights'...

GIULIANI: 'I agree with it'...

OBAMA: 'I strongly disagree'...

ROMNEY: 'A step forward'...

MCCAIN: I'm very happy...

EDWARDS: 'I could not disagree more strongly'...

You can bet this issue will be lumped in with the gun control arguments in the next Dem fundraising letter. You know - "the GOP wants to kill women and shoot college students", and all that crap.
