With temperatures in the high 90's, humidity in the teens, and gusty winds, it doesn't take much to get a fire started in Southern California. We've received barely 3 inches of rain this year (a normal year is 14 inches) and everything is so dry, a homeless guy with a cigarette has managed to set Griffith Park on fire.
We've also got fires burning in Orange and San Bernardino Counties, and the morning sky has that sickly red look to it. Last night the local media went wall-to-wall with the fire coverage, even eliminating commercials, and for a time it looked like there could be some significant loss of homes in Los Angeles. However, the LAFD and other agencies have done a masterful job of fighting this thing, and the sight of water dropping helicopters flying at 10pm into dangerous canyons is pretty inspiring. These guys are pretty brave.
This is just a preamble to what we can expect later this year as the summer temperatures really get going.
