Clinton Trouncing Obama; Giuliani Leads Non-Candidate Thompson

Interesting news from the latest USA Today/Gallup poll:
"New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has significantly widened her lead over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination," USA TODAY Washington bureau chief Susan Page writes.

She tells us that according to the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, Clinton's support among Democrats and independent voters who "lean" Democratic stands at 48%. -- up eight percentage points from three weeks ago.

Obama's support: 26%, down two points. In third: Former North Carolina senator John Edwards, at 12%.

I think you can credit Obama's recent transformation from (as Mitt Romney described it) "Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove". He just doesn't look ready to do the job.

On the GOP side, Rudy Giuliani still leads at 33% over non-candidate Fred Thompson at 21% (Thompson is now expected to announce on September 5th). John McCain is holding at 16% with Mitt Romney at 8%. The strange thing is that Romney, who has spent millions in Iowa in preparation for the Ames straw poll, will likely win despite single digit poll numbers. None of the big three will be there. This may be the first time that someone who didn't participate in the straw poll wins the nomination.
