This is kind of surprising. Every night we've gotten an automated phone call from the school district updating the status of a few schools that are near the fire area, but tonight we got a call announcing that ALL schools in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District will be closed tomorrow due to the shifting winds and poor air quality. It has been a little smokier today now that the Santa Anas have died down, but I didn't think it was bad enough to close all the schools.
This poses a potential problem for a number of events this weekend, including football games and the Mission Viejo High School home marching band competition which is our band's major fundraiser. Here's hoping things will ease up by then.
We checked my wife's district, Capistrano Unified School District, and they're closing all of their schools too. That pretty much covers the entire south county.
What was funny, right after we got the call we started hearing neighborhood kids whooping it up out in the street. They seem to be taking the news well.
