There's a new tool in the wildfire-fighting arsenal in Southern California. Check out the video of the DC-10 tanker dropping 16,000 gallons of Foschek in one pass at the Arrowhead fire. There was much debate about using this converted airliner because the hourly cost is bigger than the GDP of some small countries, but the thing is capable of dropping a trail of water or fire retardant a quarter of a mile long. In areas like the mountains where this fire is burning, aircraft are the best way to get lots of water on the head of the fire.
UPDATE: The 7,2oo gallon Martin-Mars amphibious water bomber joins the fight.
