Good News, but It's Not Over Yet

The fire situation in much of Southern California has improved as winds are down, shifting back onshore, and humidity is up. However, it's not done yet based on some incident reports I spotted:
  • I-5 is closed between Oceanside and San Clemente due to a 6,000 acre fire on the Pendleton Marine Base. That pretty much shuts down traveling between Orange and San Diego Counties unless you want to make a very lengthy detour.
  • An idiot on a motorcycle was arrested in the Running Springs area after he was spotted attempting to light a new fire. That has happened more than once in the last day.
  • The mountaintop community of Julian has been evacuated. One of the downsides of changing winds is the possibility of the fire moving into areas that havent' been burned, and Julian is one of those areas.
  • Communities on top of Palomar Mountain are also being evacuated as a fire that started yesterday on the Indian Reservation at the base of the mountain moves up the mountain. The Witch Fire and Poomacha fire have merged which creates a 200,000 acre fire that's only 1% contained. That one still has the potential for a lot of trouble.
  • I can tell the winds have changed because the air around home is now smelling pretty strongly of smoke. During the height of the windstorm the smoke was blown north and west of the house so our air stayed pretty clear.
It's not over yet, but for more people, it's looking better.
