One of the joys of this time of year is Friday night at Diablo Stadium watching the Mission Viejo Football team thrash their latest opponent (though they've been thrashed themselves a time or two this year). I just got word that our smoky skies not only cancelled school today, but will move the Friday night game to Monday night. Monday night football belongs on ESPN, not at a high school stadium.
The air is pretty cruddy today. I basically smells like the inside of a fireplace and there's still ash falling. What's kind of funny is that school is closed for the day because of the air quality, so what are all the kids doing? They're playing outside. If they had been in school they would have spent most of their day in air conditioned classrooms and out of the smoke, but instead they're out riding their bikes and skateboards and running up and down the street.
It's looking like school will probably also be closed tomorrow, and with a day off already scheduled for Monday, the kids (and their parents) are in for a long weekend.
UPDATE AND BUMPED: Schools in the Saddleback Valley and Capistrano Unified School Districts are cancelled again for Friday, and that also wipes out the home marching band competition scheduled for Saturday which is the band's major annual fundraiser. That's gonna hurt. If you'd like to donate to a really fine music program and help them with the hit they're going to take on this cancellation, you can do so here.
UPDATE2: All public high school athletic events, and most private high school events in Orange County have been cancelled for this weekend with some being rescheduled for next week. Mission Viejo will play Monday night at home.
