The Mission Viejo Diablo Marching Band and Color Guard finished 3rd in the Western Band Association state championships tonight in Monterey Park. My daughter shot this photo for me during their prelim show on Saturday night.
Those kids work awfully hard starting about three weeks before the beginning of school. They work after school every day, practice from 5-9 pm every Monday night, and compete in band competitions for six straight Saturdays leading up to the finals. They also perform the half-time shows at most home football games.
My kids have been involved in the band since the 2003 season, the last year they won the state championships. My daughter graduated last year but spent all day today and much of last night with the band as they went through their finals weekend. My son is still a member and has one year to go. It's been a great experience for both kids and some of their best friends were made in the band program at Mission.
Lucky is the parent who has kids in a music program like Mission's.
