Who are some of these special interests? You have the feminists, the pro-abortion crowd (male, female and undetermined), the black civil rights crowd, the Hispanic voters, the Jewish voters, the gay rights crowd (gay, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, confused), and antiwar lefties. These voters may have a history of voting Democrat, but they are anything but unified and depending on who the nominee turns out to be, there will be major splits in the party.
Let's look at the least likely scenario first - Hillary Clinton loses the pledged delegates, popular vote and contests won but wins the nomination due to superdelegates. Here's what will happen with the above coalitions:
- The feminists and abortion crowd will be pleased. She'll hang onto the Hispanic and Jewish voters, the the gays will stay loyal.
- The black civil rights voters will be enraged and will flock to the polls in November to punish Hillary. Some may vote for Nader, some for McCain, and many will stay home. The antiwar lefties will not be happy and many may vote for Nader. The rest will stay with Hillary.
Now, let's look at the other scenario - a win by Obama:
- The civil rights crowd will be pleased and the male and undetermined portion of the abortion crowd will be okay. The gay rights folks and antiwar lefties will likely stay with Obama.
- The feminists will be in a snit and many will withhold their favors from Obama, as will the female part of the abortion crowd. Latinos will not vote in large numbers for a black man, no matter who he is. If you don't believe me, come to Los Angeles. Blacks and Latinos are at war, and L.A.'s not the only place where that's happening. Latinos will go for McCain because they have nothing to fear from him. His immigration policy will make them quite comfortable voting for a Republican. Jewish voters will also not vote for a black man, especially a black man whose middle name is "Hussein".
I used to think that Obama was a shoe-in for president if he won the nomination. After looking at the above, I'm not so sure.
And here's another sign of the divisions to come:
UPPER PROVIDENCE, Pa. (CBS 3) ― The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is investigating a politically motivated stabbing that left one in-law hospitalized and another in prison.Hmmm. The Clinton supporter stabs the Obama supporter. That sounds about right.
Authorities said brother-in-laws Jose Ortiz and Sean Shurelds were involved in a verbal altercation over Democratic presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton when the argument escalated into a stabbing inside their family home on Honey Locust Court in Upper Providence.
Authorities said Ortiz, a registered Republican and Clinton supporter, allegedly stabbed Shurelds, an Obama supporter, in the stomach.
Shurelds was flown to an area hospital and was listed in critical condition.
I'll talk about this subject and more on tonight's BlogTalkRadio program which you can hear by clicking on the icon. Feel free to call in and join the conversation. The show kicks off at 7pm PT.
I'll also be running my favorite Oscar broadcast political jokes and will talk a little bit about the NASCAR submarine races in Fontana this weekend (which as of this writing are still underway). The call-in number will be (347) 347-5547.
