Eliot Spitzer Still Governor of New York (but the day is early)

WNBC is reporting that soon-to-be former Governor Eliot Spitzer is scrambling to see if anyone still likes him (besides his $5,500 hooker) enough to allow him to keep his job:
Sources tell WNBC.com the governor spent time Monday reaching out to supporters to gauge if he would have their support should he decide to hold onto his office.

As of late Monday, aides and Democratic colleagues told NewsChannel 4 that they expect Spitzer to submit a resignation letter he already drafted, most likely Tuesday morning.

The governor may have been linked to the ring through cell phone records, sources told NewsChannel 4.

Spitzer's involvement in the ring was caught on a federal wiretap as part of an investigation opened in recent months, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing inquiry.

The New York Democrat, identified in legal papers as "Client 9," met last month with at least one woman in a Washington hotel, the law enforcement official said.
If he was as beloved by his party as Bill Clinton was he could probably survive this and keep his job. However, Spitzer has been described by most of his contemporaries as a self-righteous jerk - and those were the people that liked him. He had a plethora of enemies (they were dancing on Wall Street) and I doubt he'll be able to find significant support for his continuing in office. He'll be a drag on the government and the party, and as a superdelegate committed to Hillary Clinton, a drag on her campaign as well as long as he stays visible.

On my internet radio show last night I played a special theme song for the Spitzer story. Since the criminal complaint refers to him as "Client 9", I dug up an old Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass song, a real bump-and-grind stripper number called "Love Potion No. 9". It fit perfectly. You can hear the show here.

For more information on why Spitzer is not a beloved figure in New York, read the Wall Street Journal piece. It's an eye-opener.
