Given the new "Second Amendment" rhetoric of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, (see the New York Times' Julie Bosman's "Clinton Portrays Herself as a Pro-Gun Churchgoer" ) I thought it might behoove hunters to hear what the NRA thinks about all Clinton trying to "out-gun" Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.
"I'm not surprised by this," says Chris Cox, the chief lobbyist of the NRA. "They know that its bad politics to be on the wrong side of the gun issue. The political graveyard is full of gun control supporters and they are trying to avoid the same fate."
Will Clinton be able to sell this new self to gun rights enthusiasts and hunters?
"Her name is synonymous with gun control, like Rosie O'Donnell," says Cox, so she will have "a very, very tough time."
We go through this every election cycle. Remember John Kerry and his "can I get me a huntin' license" bit from 2004? He was nearly laughed out of the race.
When it comes to guns (and many other issues) Democrats don't dare campaign for what they really believe because they're badly out of touch with most Americans. A Democrat trying to get votes in middle America with a pro-gun control platform would get crushed.
So, for awhile anyway, we'll hear about the value of gun ownership and the importance of sportsmen...until it no longer matters and then they'll go back to the gun-banning ways.
