I'll be shocked if there isn't a question on gun control tonight at the Democratic debate, considering that tonight is the one year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting.Obama was just endorsed by some hunter's organization, so I expect he'll have a ready answer to a gun question (regardless of the question) that will somehow work in hunting. I doubt if either candidate will come out against the DC gun ban or the unconstitutional Philadelphia laws.
Unfortunately, the question will probably be some variation of, "what would you do as President to prevent this from happening again?" And both Democrats will answer that they support the Second Amendment (as Chris Matthews would say, "HA!"), perhaps make a reference to respecting hunters (even though the Second Amendment says nothing about hunting), and tout their support of unspecified "common sense efforts to prevent gun violence."
A better question, pinning the candidates down more precisely, would be to ask, "do you support Philadelphia's recently passed five gun laws, laws that even supporters concede explicitly violate Pennsylvania state law protecting the citizens' rights to bear arms?"
What's it going to be, Democrats? The city's laws are unconstitutional? Or that you'll stick with urban Democrats who want to ignore the Second Amendment?
UPDATE: There is a gun question (from Campaign Spot):
Charlie Gibson notes that it is the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings. He notes that both talk about gun control less than they used to, and asks why.
Hillary says she just did an event with Mayor Nutter on inner city violence. Hillary says she would bring back the COPS program. She insists that it would bring down crime, even though no causal link between the program and lower crime rates was ever established.
She says she would reinstate the assault weapons ban.
"I respect the Second Amendment, I respect the rights of lawful gun owners... Most lawful gun owners want to keep guns out of the wrong hands."
UPDATE: Obama says he never favored an all-out ban on handguns. Either a lot of reporting on him is wrong, or he's lying.
