OCONOMOWOC, Wis. — An explosion at a church in Oconomowoc, Wis. on Wednesday destroyed the downtown building and damaged two homes.During my church insurance training a number of years ago I spent a couple of days touring churches in central Wisconsin to look at different types of construction and architecture in order to understand how to value the replacement costs of the buildings. There are some magnificent old church buildings in that state.
Workers from We Energies are on the scene at First Baptist Church and believe the explosion happened when a gas service line was hit, MyFOXMilwaukee reported.
There are reportedly injuries as a result of the explosion. At least two people have been taken to the hospital, one transported by emergency helicopter.
A man who works a block away from the church said he heard the explosion.
"The church basically had disappeared and the only thing remaining was the steeple in the front," Waukesha County Board Supervisor Kenneth Herro told the Associated Press.
