NEW YORK -- A crane has collapsed at a construction site near 91st Street and First Avenue. Initial, unconfirmed reports say two people have died. There would likely have been people walking the streets and lots of cars in that area. Early reports say there are 2 dead, but it could easily get worse. There is major damage to the buildings surrounding the crane.
News 4 New York chopper shows a large portion of the crane tumbled onto a building, and emergency workers have flooded the scene.
The Fire Department says it has pulled people out of the wreckage. Their conditions are not immediately known.
City officials say the crane operator was injured.
This is the second time in 10 weeks a large building crane has collapsed onto surrounding structures. Somebody in the NYC government has a lot to answer for. Politically, this won't help Mayor Bloomberg's hopes of being a VP pick for Obama.
