"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."The Obama campaign is hopping mad (I wonder how they knew Bush was talking about them?):
Responding with a statement, the Obama campaign seized on Bush's remarks even as it was unclear to whom Bush was referring.Game, set, match to Dana Perino. Nice overhead slam right back at the Obama campaign.
"It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 6Oth anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack," Obama said in the statement. "George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel."
The White House said Bush's comment wasn't a reference to Obama.
"It is not," press secretary Dana Perino told reporters in Israel. "I would think that all of you who cover these issues and have for a long time have known that there are many who have suggested these types of negotiations with people that the president, President Bush, thinks that we should not talk to. I understand when you're running for office you sometimes think the world revolves around you. That is not always true. And it is not true in this case."
UPDATE: Obama has clearly stepped in it by having his campaign and their surrogates respond so vigorously against Bush's statement. The fact that they felt the statement was a direct reference to themselves tells you how sensitive they are about some of Obama's plans to meet with every tinpot dictator in the world without preconditions. It was a naive plan to begin with, and by lashing out at Bush with campaign aides and Dem losers like Tom Daschle and John Kerry it shows that the "Messiah" Obama has a weak spot in his foreign policy plans.
The campaign should have ignored Bush's comments and acted as though they didn't matter at all and they would have been quickly forgotten. Instead, they've picked a fight with the president that they can't possible win and the media attention will only spotlight Obama's foreign policy foolishness.
The Messiah has a glass jaw.
UPDATE 2: From another loser, Joe Biden (language alert):
Sen. Joe Biden, piling on to Democratic complaints about President Bush's speech in Israel today:I'm doing a Google search to find all the times that Biden used the same terms to refer to foreign statements made by Bill Clinton and Jimmuh Carter.
"This is bullshit, this is malarkey. This is outrageous, for the president of the United States to go to a foreign country, to sit in the Knesset . . . and make this kind of ridiculous statement."
Still looking...........
