The Running of the Gays

Be careful if you're anywhere near the California border 30 days from now. That's when gay marriage will become legal in California, and since there's no residency requirement in this state to get a marriage license, there will be stampede worthy of the Oklahoma Land Rush as herds of mincing men and burly women from all across the land come here to join in unholy matrimony.

Celebs will be getting into the act as well:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ellen DeGeneres is putting the California Supreme Court ruling in favor of gay marriage into action - she and Portia de Rossi plan to wed, DeGeneres announced during a taping of her talk show.

Of course, once those folks have their newly minted license in hand, you can expect selected couples to return to their home states and demand that those states honor those licenses under the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution. More lawsuits will follow, all of them citing the California case as precedent.

There is still a possibility that the California love fest will come to a screeching halt in November should voters approve the latest Constitutional Amendment which would effective overturn the California Supreme Court ruling that set off this melee. However, because the initiative did not anticipate thousands (or millions) of "married" gays at the time of passage, there's no provision in the initiative that automatically voids those licenses. That will likely result in more litigation, and who knows, maybe they can get the Supremes to declare that new law void as well.

One thing for sure, it ain't over just because the butch lady is singing.
