Hillary Clinton Making a Pitch for VP

It's a breaking news kind of day, and now the latest AP blast is that Hillary is open to being the VP:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton has told congressional colleagues she would be open to becoming Barack Obama's vice presidential nominee, saying she would consider it if it would help Democrats win the White House.

Clinton, a New York senator, made the comment on a conference call with other New York lawmakers Tuesday, according a participant on the call.

The senator's remarks came in response to a question from Democratic Rep. Nydia Velazquez who said she believed the best way for Obama to win over key voting blocs, including Hispanics, would be for him to choose Clinton as his running mate.

"I am open to it," Clinton replied, if it would help the party's prospects in November.

I think Hillary pretty much has to say this, but at the same time puts a lot of pressure on the Obama people. With some 17 million votes in her favor, there are a lot of people out there that might want to see her continue in some fashion in the race. It could also be another play for sympathy when Obama picks someone else. It helps set her up for 2012.

Either way, she's just put Obama in a position of weakness, that's probably not something he wanted today. And does Obama want to have Bill Clinton hanging around all through the campaign?

This also effectively diverts the media on a day when Obama was going to get all the attention as he clinches the nomination (thanks to the superdelegates who can still change their votes). The wheels keep turning.
