We just followed McCain down the steps following the vote to ask him about the reaction of House Republicans to the vote.
He didn't appreciate the company.
McCain: "Excuse me, you're bothering me."
Politico: "I'm bothering you?"
McCain: "Excuse me, I have to go."
It's probably a shock to the press to find out McCain doesn't want their company. They used to be his best friends.
And, from The Caucus:
WASHINGTON – It was Senator Barack Obama who crossed the aisle.
As the senators gathered to vote on the $700 billion financial rescue package on Wednesday evening, Mr. Obama walked over to the Republican side of the chamber to extend a greeting to Senator John McCain.
He got a chilly response.
While it took Mr. Obama several seconds to make his way over to see his rival, Mr. McCain barely pivoted his body as he took Mr. Obama’s hand for a handshake that lasted just a moment. The eye contact was just as brief.
McCain dissed the Obamessiah? How awful.
This is actually the third story in the last two days describing McCain as irritable. He did a meeting with the Des Moines Register editorial board and was described as sarcastic and a bit combative in some of his answers. Could this be a new mainstream media meme developing? Don't vote for Grumpy John?
