Lindsey Graham, the senator from South Carolina and best friend to John McCain, nearly upstaged the candidate at a rally here Friday. Standing at the podium, with McCain and his wife, Cindy behind him, Graham basked under the floodlights.
“Since I never get to talk much I’m in no hurry, I’m sorta enjoying this,” he said.
Then came joke after joke after joke.
Standing on top of the stage in the center of the football field, he laughed and said, “You know I played high school football for four years, first time I ever been on the field.”
And then, when thanking Cindy McCain: “Cindy’s dad was a World War II veteran, he got shot down three times in the Army Air Corps serving his country,” Graham said. “John got shot down. She likes guys that got shot down. She’s the patron saint of every guy that’s ever got shot down.”
He also took some shots at the candidate himself. “John McCain has lived the American dream,” Graham said. “He’s a Navy guy that married a beautiful woman that owns a beer distributorship. That’s as good as it gets.”
Naturally, Barack Obama was also fair game. “We don’t need somebody who sounds good, we need somebody who works hard,” Graham said. “I could make a real short speech. It would be entitled ‘The Times that Barack Obama Did Something Hard and Controversial in the Senate.’ I am now done.”
Why he was at it, Graham went for the crowd as well. In response to the copious “Joe the Plumber” signs, Graham said, “I see a lot of people in Durango are called Joe. It’s a beautiful place but y’all don’t have many names.”
Those are actually pretty good. We could use a lot more humor in this campaign.
