The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August. We would have bought our own Greek temple but that had already been done (and it cost $140,000). Let's see some examination of where the DNC's money is going. They probably spent more money than that on duct tape for Michelle Obama's mouth.
According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.
The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.
The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.
As Don Surber points out, Dem woman candidates haven't exactly been fashion plates:
Democrat Hillary Clinton wore cheesy polyester pantsuits. If she shelled out a few bucks on something you couldn’t get at Kmart, she might be president.Given how Palin looks in those designer duds, it's hard to find fault with the RNC's expenditures (unless you're a Democrat and prefer your candidates dumpy and ugly).
I'm not sure why Democrats are so kvetched over this; the RNC isn't using tax money to fund these expenditures. It's not like they're taking money from people with high incomes and "spreading" it to people who don't pay taxes.
Oh wait, they like that kind of stuff.
Incidentally, Palin won't get to keep the clothes. They will be donated after the campaign. You'll be able to tell where the clothes went. Either the local homeless population will suddenly look FABULOUS!, or rich women will be lined up at the Goodwill store.
