Reported Crime Against a McCain Volunteer Now Appears to Be a Hoax

A number of conservative sites, including Ace, Don Surber, and Michelle Malkin, had questions right from the start, but I admit I thought it was legit. It now appears that the McCain volunteer in Pennsylvania made up the story of being assaulted because of her McCain bumpersticker:

Police tell KDKA that a campaign volunteer has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

That's just really, really stupid. We've seen a lot of these fake hate crime stories coming from lefties (the Duke Lacrosse team case, the noose at Columbia, the California professor who destroyed her own car), but I'm trying to remember the last time we had a hoax like this coming from the conservative side. I'm sure one of the lefties that stop by here will enlighten me.
