"N***ers Better Not Come to West Hollywood"

The anti-Prop 8 protests in West Hollywood have taken on a decidedly racist tone, according to this report at Rod 2.0 (Note: I've left the language in the way it was reported because it's important to understand what kind of people are involved):
Not that this wasn't expected. The recent passage of California's Proposition 8 has exposed some of the latent racism of many within the LGBT community—instigated in part by many in the e-telligentsia such as proto-racist Andrew Sullivan and columnist Dan Savage. Unfortunately the "blame the blacks" meme is being commonly accepted by some so-called "progressive" gay activists. A number of Rod 2.0 and Jasmyne Cannick readers report being subjected to taunts, threats and racist abuse at last night's marriage equality rally in Los Angeles.

Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.

It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.

Los Angeles resident and Rod 2.0 reader A. Ronald says he and his boyfriend, who are both black, were carrying NO ON PROP 8 signs and still subjected to racial abuse.

Three older men accosted my friend and shouted, "Black people did this, I hope you people are happy!" A young lesbian couple with mohawks and Obama buttons joined the shouting and said there were "very disappointed with black people" and "how could we" after the Obama victory. This was stupid for them to single us out because we were carrying those blue NO ON PROP 8 signs! I pointed that out and the one of the older men said it didn't matter because "most black people hated gays" and he was "wrong" to think we had compassion. That was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. I guess he never thought we were gay.

Jasmyne Cannick has a similar and unfortunate report. "I have received several phone calls from Blacks, both gay and straight, who were caught up in Westwood around the time of that march. From being called 'niggers' to being accosted in their cars and told that it was because of 'you people gays don’t have equal rights and you better watch your back,' these gays have lost their damn minds."

The verbal harassment follows a steady stream of racist comments left on this blog and many others across the gay virtual community. At least a dozen racist comments have been removed from this blog since Tuesday, such as, "Thank you Black people for denying gay people the same rights that you deserve and have", "Black people make me feel like a piece of shyt when it should have been a night of celebration for all," and the succinct, "F--K you niggers."

Nice folks. Isn't it interesting that all those folks demanding tolerance for their lifestyle choices are willing to condemn others for theirs?

As far as the statements that blacks were responsible for the passage of Prop 8, there's some truth to that according to ABC:
ABC News' Alex Green Reports: Barack Obama won the presidential election on Tuesday but did the Democrats' win contribute to the passage of a measure banning gay marriage in California?

It's a question being hotly debated in the blogosphere and the theory goes something like this: a popular, African-American presidential contender increases black turnout. Blacks, by in large, oppose gay marriage. Therefore, proposition eight banning gay marriage in a Democratic-leaning state such as California passes 52-48 percent.

Turns out it's not quite that simple.

"Whites voted very narrowly against the ban, 51-49 percent. Asian-Americans voted the same. Hispanics voted for it, by 53-47 percent. Blacks voted for it, overwhelmingly, 70-30. Blacks can be said to have put it over the top. Hypothetically, had no blacks voted, we compute a vote of 50-50," according to an analysis by ABC News Polling Director Gary Langer.

Yes, black Californians who voted for Obama also supported the gay marriage ban by a wide margin but so did Hispanics. And white and Asian-American opposition to the ban wasn't large enough to overcome the spread, so to speak.
And then there's this from my home town:
A Mission Viejo gay couple has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to pave the way for same-sex marriage nationwide. Along the way, they plan to split California into two states....

A third solution is planned by Richard Gilbert, the attorney for Hammer and Smelt,
according to kfi640am. The plan would create an initiative for the 2010 ballot which would divide California into two states. The constitution of the newly created State would ”guarantee and recognize the fundamental rights of all people and contain a provision that its constitution may not be amended to take away fundamental rights of any person.”" Gilbert went on to say, “We’re going to teach the whole nation a lesson.”
Well, good luck with all that.

The older generation of gays and lesbians (those of us over 50) had to learn tolerance in order to survive, otherwise we would have been smothered by our opponents long ago.

The younger generation needs to learn from the experiences of older men and women who have been in this struggle for 30 and 40 years or more.

If you use a term like the "N" word, you ARE a racist, no ifs, and or buts about it. If you want to be accepted, you have to accept other people. You don't have to like them, you can argue intelligently with them, but when you invoke hate speech, you invite hate speech upon yourself, and you have no one ELSE to blame BUT yourself.

Grow up, get a grip, and make a difference instead of throwing a racist "fit".

OK, here we go again.

If you want respect, you have to give respect. If you use hate speech, you can expect it to be used against you.

Whatever happened to taking the "high road" and "do unto others as you have them do unto you"?

You don't have to be religious to recognize that some simple moral rules make life a lot more pleasant for EVERYONE...EVERYONE.

Stop using hate speech. It diminishes everyone who uses it. And it demeans our community.

Just stop.
