The Turkey Pardon Controversy

Critics of President Bush, always looking for something to gripe about, are now complaining about the White House tradition of "pardoning" a turkey:
After pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey in a public display of mercy Wednesday, President Bush will be served turkey as part of his holiday meal, ABC News has learned. Critics call the practice a "charade."

Questioned about the apparent hypocrisy of the practice, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel was unruffled. "You should try your hand at open mic night at the Laugh Factory," said Stanzel. He promised he would attend the performance.

A spokesman for president-elect Barack Obama declined to comment on the matter.

The back-to-back Presidential turkey saving/turkey eating has been going on since at least 1947, when then-president Harry Truman held the first modern-day White House turkey pardoning.

Back when this blog was just starting in 2004 I commented on something I'd like to see at a future turkey pardoning ceremony:
Just once, maybe in 2008 as he's getting ready to leave office, I'd love to hear the President say:

"Every year we send these birds off to the zoo, but this year, we're eatin' 'em!"

The White House chef could then do his best Emeril Lagasse impression and BAM!, two turkeys ready to go to the oven. I bet that would make the evening news.

Needless to say, I'm disappointed.

Next year I expect President Obama to not only pardon the turkeys, but give each one of them a $1,000 tax rebate. Since the turkeys pay as much income tax as over 40% of Americans, why shouldn't they benefit from the Obama tax plan as well?
