The Democratic Great Communicator Isn't Always: As good as he is delivering a speech, Obama is not a good extemporaneous speaker. It's been rare in his political career you get to see him doing both back to back and the contrast is stunning. The conference was, frankly, boring and long-winded. His answer to the first question was an unforgivably meandering and pointless 10 minutes.Obama reminds me of a gospel group I've worked with a bunch of times. They had their own little band with a piano and bass and frankly were pretty bad. Timing was off, pitch was negotiable, and they just were never together. In other words, Obama without a teleprompter.
One night we were working with them and in the second half of the concert they decided to sing with prerecorded background tracks. It was like night and day. They were together, on key, and far superior. Obama with a teleprompter.
I almost told the gospel group they should never work with live music again, but I knew I'd hurt some feelings.
However, I wouldn't hesitate to tell Obama he should never work without a teleprompter again. It's just too painful for America otherwise.
